Talkabout the Walkabout 03/27/2010
We're featuring the Greco Collective at the studio tonight at the South Park Walkabout. This is truly a prolific family. Lizette and her husband Rob work with their children, Sofia and Enzo and create beautiful 3-dimensional structures. Sofia and Enzo draw their creations on paper and Lizette and Rob translate their drawings into plush art using recycled fabrics from bedsheets, vintage fabric, curtains, second-hand clothes, etc. The meat exhibit is now on display in the building and tonight they will be selling some of their other pieces in the studio. Come by and check it out! We will also be hosting Sonnie Owens Jewelry and items from Susie Ghahremani's boygirlparty will be there for sale. 15% of our artist sale proceeds will go towards Shakti Rising, a non-profit organization that helps disadvantaged girls and women get back on their feet. Add Comment Lets Go Fly A Kite 03/24/2010

More pictures from our kite class are here. We will be off next week for Spring Break and Easter. Then the week of April 5, we will have a 3 day camp starting Wednesday, April 7 to Friday, April 9. Sign up online here. We're also happy to announce that we will be hosting two Summer Camps at the French American School in La Jolla the week of June 21 and the week of July 26. Merci Valerie! The latest upsurge of hand embroidery in the indie craft community has brought the art back to the forefront of popularity. I remember the wall hangings from the 70s well. The lions, owls, mushrooms, Holly Hobby, etc. As a child of the 70s, I like to put a little bit of the 70s in my work with a modern twist. The purist in me will only do crewel embroidery with 2 ply wool and raw linen. That is the beauty of taking a vintage craft and making it your own aesthetic. I like to copy my child's art on linen and transform it into an embroidered piece of art. I also like to hand embroider their silhouettes and frame them up for family gifts. Hand embroider has opened up a whole new outlet for my creativity as well as a form of relaxation. One of my favorite mixed media artists uses hand embroidery in her work - Laura McCafferty. Another artist who uses hand embroidery in her work is Tilleke Schwarz. I love how these artists put a lot of thought, time and details into their work. And yes, embroidery is NOT an instant gratification art. It does take a lot of time to complete a project. So that is why home ec. is going to start small. Take a class and see what it is all about. We have a large collection of vintage embroidery literature as well as new Japanese patterns! 4 hour tour 03/02/2010
home ec. studio has made a change to our Sunday hours. Our Sunday classes have always ran over 3 hours. We cannot always predict how well our projects are picked up by our students, especially for our students who have never sewn anything in their lives. Therefore, our classes will now be 4 hours long and will be held from 10 am - 2 pm. We will still have open studio hours from 2 pm - 5 pm. We are always looking to provide quality teaching so the same price applies for 4 hours of instruction - $45. |
