Update on Classes and Website 06/29/2009
0 Comments

I added our calendar of events to the website and streamlined the pages a bit.  If you go into our Summer '09 page, there will be links to the online checkout pages.  We are also planning on adding another basic machine sewing class in August (tentative for August 16) since the noon class on July 26 was canceled.  We are working on getting our space in South Park in the old Burlingame Garage starting August 1.

Adjustments 06/25/2009

We made a few modifications to our schedule.  There was little interest in the "Getting to know your machine" class so we added a basic knitting class to this time slot.  By doing this, we have to reschedule the 12 pm - 2 pm Basic Sewing class to another date in August (date will be "to be determined").  The 2 pm class is still open.

Announcement for location! 06/22/2009

We are still looking for the perfect location and quite honestly, I don't know if it will happen in time for the first summer camp, that is set for July 13.  So we decided to have the camp at my home, 3619 Arnold Ave. in the meantime.

We have received positive (and some negative) feedback to this great endeavor and Yvonne and I are really excited, yet cautious about it.  In this economy, we understand that money is a big factor.  But what a great time to learn how to make something yourself instead of purchasing it at Anthropologie.  Speaking of Anthro, I noticed this blouse there and it looked very familiar to the girl's summer tank that I posted a few weeks ago.  So I decided to make it in a woman's size.  This top is so easy to make for a beginner and will save you $68.

Girl\'s tunic 06/15/2009

One of my favorite things to do is up-cycle.  Back in the day, during my pseudo Laura Ashley phase, I bought these Ralph Lauren bedsheets from Home Goods.  Well, the floral fancy went the back of the linen closet.  Bedsheets have a lot of yardage and I decided that this designer fabric should not go to waste.  And voila!  A girl's tunic...

Zakka Knitting 06/14/2009

Since I mention Japanese Zakka quite a bit, I should explain what that is. "Zakka" is the Japanese term for "household goods".  It's much more of a movement that has been taking over the craft genre for some time now.  The Japanese Mooks (mag/books) are a great source of inspiration for handmade zakka.  Last night I finished a potholder that is hand knit intarsia (color block knitting) with organic cotton yarn.  The cross theme is common in Scandinavian design so it looks great with my vintage Dansk Kobenstyle pot collection.  I think this potholder is a great project for an intermediate or even an experienced beginner knitter.  Intarsia knitting is so much fun and less complicated than fairisle knitting.  That really scares me.

home ec. studio aesthetic 06/12/2009

I wanted to show a little bit of home ec. studio's aesthetic.  Although we have not moved into a space, Yvonne and I have been brain storming on decor and such; our projects would be more Japanese zakka as opposed to the average Michael's or Joann's project.

For the intermediate or advanced crochet student, I've been trying to come up with some group projects and came up with the miniature pillow.  It is made out of euroflax, which is a linen yarn.  The pillow inside is also raw linen and it is stuffed with 100% wool.  It would be great as a scented pillow, possibly lavender.

I've also been scouring through some simple clothing patterns for beginners.  Yes, even beginners can make a simple linen tunic.  If you are not familiar with Japanese Mooks (Magazine/books), they offer a plethora of design inspiration.  Their instructions are image based so you don't even need to understand or speak Japanese.  BTW, the Zakka Sewing book on the left is in English and is available on Amazon.com.  The Check and Stripe books are available on Amazon.jp.

And last but not least, our Janome mini sews arrived.  This is an excellent machine for children to learn on.  The speed is not as fast as the regular machines and it has a good number of stitches for basic sewing.  Apparently, quilters take these on the road when they travel to trade shows.  I've been using it for project design over my full size machine!

Finally, all summer classes are ready to be purchased online.  They are located under the Summer Camp page, the Adult Sew page and the Adult Knit/Crochet page.  See the "Classes" page for details.  We've also improved our "Contact Us" page with a place to send us your email for updates and newsletters.  Our future blog entries will contain pictures of what we have in store for class projects so keep checking!  For the summer camps, we are going to offer multiple projects to choose from so that they can go to multiple camps and work on different projects.

We are still in the process of securing studio space.  We will keep you posted on our summer location.
