First month of home ec. studio 07/27/2009
July was our first month in business and it was a great experience. Teaching is a pretty rewarding experience whether you are teaching math, reading, science, etc. The feeling you get when your students are happy and comfortable with what they have learned and feel confident about doing it on their own is pretty exhiliarating. Along with our summer camp, we also hosted beginning knitting and sewing classes for adults and although different from teaching kids, was also very rewarding. Everyone loved the projects, which we felt were wearable and hip - (a summer scarf and a summer dress). We hope next months classes are as successful. ![]() The ladies loved sewing the basic summer dress. It is suitable for any body type and light enough to wear during these hot summer months. ![]() Believe it or not, these fashionable divas did not know how to sew on the machine when they arrived! ![]() They also learned a little about pattern making and sizing while they were here. Add Comment Summer Camp #1 Dunzo! 07/17/2009
Yvonne and I have been waiting for this week to come for quite some time. All the anxiety, fear and excitement for the past few weeks has paid off. The first week of summer camp has come to a close and what a learning experience it was! It was a lot of revising here and there but in the end, we feel the kids were excited to learn what we were teaching them (with a little frustration) and they came out with a skill. They might not have come out knitting a scarf, but gears are in place and with practice, they will get there. We had a terrific bunch of students and on day 5 they came home with A LOT of goodies... needlecases, brag books, plush brooches, crocheted bracelets, a knapack they sewed on the machine, knitting needles, yarn and pom poms. What more can you ask for? See here for pictures. We also have our Fall schedule lined up for after school classes and Sunday classes. See our calendar for September if you are interested. After school classes will be held on Wednesdays from 1 pm - 3:30 pm and Fridays from 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm. Fees are $155/month/student and 5% of your child's fee will be donated to your child's school. Each month, we will introduce hand and machine sewing to your child by working on various projects. Each month consists of four (2.5 hour) classes. Our first monthly project is "Design and Make your own Plush Monster". ![]() Mermyl is made from recycled wool and felt fabric and vintage buttons. ![]() Our pirate is also made from recycled fabrics - wool, felt and striped jersey knit from an old t-shirt with a vintage button eye. New classes for Fall and more 07/10/2009
I just updated our calendar with our projected schedule for the rest of the year and our planned projects for the after school program till June 2010. Take a look at our calendar for more details! I'll be posting pictures of next week's summer camp and more pictures of future projects in the weeks to come. Also, keep an eye out for our next newsletter to get more information on future classes! Camp #1 Approaching 07/06/2009
Camp #1 starts next week and we are really excited about the projects that we are going to teach. We just finished up this really simple drawstring bag design and I know the kids will be able to machine sew this one with minimal assistance. Bunny not included. Moving Forward with Space 07/03/2009
![]() I met with our building owner today and picked out a spot for our studio. It still needs to be built out but I can already see our vision coming to fruition. Although we downsized our space and gave up the window location, I feel our new spot is just as good and I'm glad it was available. We will have a sky light directly above our space and although we don't have the beautiful windows that define the buliding, our studio may still be seen by foot traffic off of Fern Street if we place our window correctly. I am really excited about the space and hopefully it will be ready by August 1! Not only is the building really cool, it has a rich history which is even cooler. This used to be the Burlingame Garage. In the early part of the 20th century, the trolley ran through South Park for commuters to downtown. It ran right through that corner where the old Snippy's was. That is why those corner buildings have such odd shapes. People would park their cars in the garage (or get it serviced) and take the trolley to downtown. Imagine that. Without any formal roads and freeways, that must have been the fastest way to get to downtown. ![]() This was the original space that we wanted. The coveted window space that we couldn't afford and so we relinquished it and settled for an interior space. It would have been so wonderful to have this spot but... ![]() On the Fern Street side, we are going to be in the very back left spot near the rear entrance to the building. We'll be closer to the Fern Street businesses, which is actually a better spot for us since it will be walking distance near the Whistle Stop, Rebecca's Coffee, Velo Cult , citizen video and The Grove. Don't you just love the exposed brick of the walls? ![]() On the 30th Street side, we will be right next door to South Park Fitness and the old San Diego Firehouse, which is one of the oldest standing Fire stations in San Diego. Hopefully a restaurant goes in there. Next door to that (where South Park Fitness is), used to be Rose's Grocery Store, the local market. Rick, the building owner gave us an article about the history of these buildings and it is quite an interesting read with before and after photos. I must say they did an excellent job in restoring these buildings and I'm glad they were not torn down. |
